約翰·史坦貝克 (John Steinbeck, 1902-1968),出生於加州沙林納斯(Salinas),成長於距太平洋岸二十五哩之遙的農地沃谷,河谷海岸都是他最傑出小說的場景。1919年,進入史丹佛大學就讀,斷斷續續選讀文學與寫作,1925年輟學離校,往後五年在紐約市當工人和記者維生,同時致力創作第一本小說《金杯》。

婚後遷居太平洋叢林市(Pacific Grove),出版兩本以加州為主題的的短篇小說《天堂牧場》和《大地的象徵》,另有數篇短篇小說後來集結成《長谷》。描述蒙特利(Monterey)鄉野鄙人的《薄餅坪》問世,使他功成名就,經濟無虞。
